Daniels full race Hillman Imp engine manifold

A customer in Germany named Daniel placed an order for two Hillman Imp manifolds,one is the full race version,the other a large bore Sport Janspeed type,we posted the full race one first,its the one in this picture,his second Sport one has just arrived,we use either surface or airmail post,it depends on urgency and what your willing to spend?

The team giving a welcome hand,sending your shore lines over takes time,the period of slack water really seemed short when you had to secure fast before the tide turns,the actual drying rig is in effect a position in space and a reference point,it will stop you leaning inwards but not outwards,as the frame is loose on the river bank,so your shore lines have to do all the work.
Baraka,an Endurance design in ferro,was one of the many to take adavantage of the drying rig we had set up,as Frank Sinatra once sang I did it my way!

The story of Tididi,turn over time is close!

Andrew has been moving faster since he started his hull skin process,so much so he is thinking of what method to use to turn his boat the right side up,this is from his own blog.

While the hole filling is continuing, and during periods where the weather is too bad to work on the boat, I have been constructing a scale model of TIDIDI. This is mainly to assist in the planning of the hull turning, in order to see which is going to be the best way of doing this with minimum effort and manpower, and without too much modification of the boat shed. The most likely method is going to be one suggested by Roy McBride, which he used successfully on his own boat, whereby a pinion is fitted to both the transom and the stem, which then rest in "A" frames, allowing the hull to turn much like a "Spit". The model will assist in getting the best position for these pinions so that the hull is balanced throughout the turning process. It will also allow me to see where the ground needs to be excavated to allow for the widest section of the hull.

Two Durban built boats

The Aratu Yacht Club, Salvador,Brasil, 1977.Picture by Roy McBride with a Canon film camera and a 200mm tele lens using Kodaks Ektachrome pro slide film.

Both these boats were made from ferro cement and in Durban,on South Africas east coast.Durban had many specialist built ferro boats at one time, the far boat Rainmaker did a circumnavigation, two guys built it, they started when both single but as time went on, the girl friends became wives, one of who had a child (Sharon?) the group sailed off as one but the couple with the child took a decision to get off the boat in St Helena Isle, when the other couple finished their circumnavigation, ending back up in Durban, the family with the child took over the yacht, then they too sailed off, thats a nice true story.

Rainmaker,its name? well I was told by Peter the joint owner, that when ever they went to start working on the boat it rained!

Slangkop Lighthouse,our second boat,we were mad but this is the boat we went cruising on.

We Re launched fifty one (51) weeks after taking this stripped hull and deck off these rocks,a year after that we went cruising to Brasil,Venezuela,Trinidad and Tobago,more on this boat later.

Their Nicholson 35 is registered in London but they did not have too far to travel this time, as they have rented a marina at HBYC for some years now and recently purchased a vacant marina when its owner sailed off to the Azores.

As you can see from these pictures,it was very much a team event,both with tying up,cleaning and then painting,we needed to clean and apply paint in one tide only,not that we could not have stayed longer as we had no fee to bother about.

Jacare and the anchorage at Cabedelo Nautica,(brian stevens prop,) is at the very top of this picture and to the left hand side,the entrance to Cabedelo can easily be seen below,as can the long reef off the beach!


Simply put its north of Brasils large city Recifie and at a position of Latitude, 6.967º S. Longitude, 34.833º W. Please take great caution when entering this port as the beach off Cabedelo has a long reef that is low in the water,Cabedelos shipping channel is well marked with bouys,so once entering you just follow them in.The village of Jacare where Brian Stevens runs Cabedelo Nautica ltda, is some way up the river towards Joao Pessoa and south of the river entrance,use your depth sounder to find the deeper water,as the navigational channel moves from side to side of the river.

We had first try at using this rig, it being my idea I suppose I had to proove the thing would work? At the right time of the month the tide is a good two meters,which is plenty for for most boats.Here we can see Ocean Cloud tied up to the drying rig,the tide has already turned and will soon run out at four knots or so,Rob from Wings is watching by on his rubber duck,I think it will have been he who took our lines ashore,in the back ground to the right is his boat Wings,a Muira design by Berkemeyer.The other yacht to the right must be Fiddler,a Mauritius 45 belonging to the Frye family from Hout Bay.

We had three Endurance designs (peter ibold) using Brians facilities at Jacare,Brasil,Brian Stevens is a great guy (he is still there),always willing to help us yachties in return for what ever he could source for us at good prices,batteries,antifoul and having our 9kg gas cylinders filled too.

Tumlaren 27 as a kit

Knud Reimers designed this boat in 1934,one that was built in Sweden came out to South Africa on the deck of a Whaler,she was boat number eight (8) built and named Astra,her lines are just a joy to look at,we can create a kit using MDF as the formers,the construction would be in strip plank/epoxy but cold moulded ockume marine ply to BS1088 grade with epoxy,is also possible,contact me should you be interested.

Ocean Cloud on the poles at Cabedelo,on Brasils,east coast.

This was back in 1988,we had an unusual gathering at Jacare,when HBYC yachts arrived and none planed to meet the others that I remember,Ocean Cloud,Endurance 37,Fidler,Mauritius 45,Baywood a 38ft Pheonix? with Alan and Mary Gold aboard and with their son and daughter aboard, were always called The Goldies. We also had other South African yachts arrive too,Dave on Pearl,a trimaran,Baraka,an Endurance 40 in a ferro construction with Sharon and Ian,then Niels and Millie on their Bongers 39,Gypsy Girl,Dancing Diamond,a Cape Cutter 27,Wings,a Muira, and Shellyco,another Endurance 37 like our own.I was pleased I had used this rig by now, as I had made a plan with Brian Stevens in that I design the rig,he buys the materials and all the yachties build it,then use it once and when we sail off ,Brian gets to rent the rig out,it was a succesfull win win situation on both sides.

Hillman Imp fuel injection system

We are now looking to produce a fuel injection system that will replace the normal Weber DCOE or similar carburetor,the basic idea is we can supply you the injectors and engine managment system plus our well known full race inlet and exhaust manifold,or if you have a manifold already,remove the Webers and replace with our injection system,which will also have all the required linkages.No pictures just yet but watch this space!
