Dave starts his Argie 10 building

On Tuesday last week we sent the Argie 10 kit by road to his address about 1000 miles away to the North East, by Friday it had arrived, nice service from our couriers!

Two of the family check out  the contents of the carton we shipped.
That epoxy, fumed silica, micro balloons, glass tapes and a book on International paints.

The CNC cut sheets of 6mm okoume marine ply were shipped between two sheets of 9mm pine ply for safety, we then steel band strap the pack for a secure package.

Davids son in front of one of the three 6mm sheets of okoume marine plywood that will soon be made into a boat.

Davids daughter inspects all the CNC shaped panels when David had them cut from the three sheets of 6mm plywood.

Druma looking at the sea in Hout Bay

Druma  (drumbeat charters) came to us around ten years back, he has been a regular crew member when sailing ever since.

Always fascinated  by the local sea life, which in the Hout Bay and Chapmans Bay area near Cape Town, South Africa is plentiful.

What's out there?

Well you will always see Seals but often Dolphins, Sunfish and Whales, Sharks are out there too but we have yet to see one!

Extra Sailing Dinghy kits

This may be possible as we now have the plans and have been asked to price CNC cutting on the hull.

Both pictures were posted by Geoffrey on the class web site, my thanks.

Costing will be done soon, permission from the class association to get a class number should be sought by the kit buyers?

The design was drawn by H H McWilliams and in 1961, the boat is 3660mm long.
The plans we hold are dated April 1989, please advise if any updates were drawn after that date before we produce a DXF cut file.

Porche 906 circa 1966 information wanted!

The current owner of the car is a good friend and asked me to find further documentation than what he already has.

Wow, I didn't expect to get a reply so fast...

I was actually looking at the old pictures of the Cape Town 3 hours in the late 1960s.

The car I'm looking for is the dark green Porsche 906 Carrera 6 of Michael De Udy. It was raced during the 1966 9 hours of Kyalami (I have a lot of pictures of the car during this race, and De Udy crashed). 

It was also there at the 3 hours of Lourenço Marques in December 1966, the 3 hours of Pietermaritzburg (also known as the Roy Hesketh 3 hours), and two additional races in Kyalami and Cape Town in January 1967.  Then it came back to the U.K.

Attached is a picture of the car in the 1966 Kyalami 9 hours, before the crash, as well as a current picture taken a couple of weeks ago, and one from Le Mans Classic in 2012.

Thank you for offering to post the request for me, can you send me the link? I will ask directly, hopefully it will yield some results!

A short note about the car: following the crash at Kyalami, it was repaired and later repainted. 

It is possible that in the races it entered after Kyalami, it already had its livery it had in the U.K. in 1967; light green with darker green stripes in the middle.

Perkins 4108 marine engine, new parts

The work load will soon allow the rebuild of a stripped down Perkins 4108M engine with a sea water heat exchanger, below is the parts package that will go into the engine.

The parts include new pistons and liners, bearings to the crank and small ends to the pistons, plus all the correct gaskets to ensure an oil tight engine.


We have the engines original boat allocation documents, matching numbers and the workshop manual which will be sold with the engine.

The engine can be sold with or without the heat exchanger, the velvet drive 2:1 gearbox is an option, we can also consider taking your old Perkins 4108m as a part exchange.

You are right. Vision *IS* a WiFi router. You don't need another one. Your PC,

WiFi range is approx 20m. It can be reduced if the boat is metal or if it is mounted near large metal objects like tanks or engines.

Keep in mind... the Vision and XB-8000 don't give you access to the internet or a shore WiFi. Rather, they establish an on-board WiFi network between themselves and your various devices. They can have 5 devices simultaneously connected to it and will route data between those devices and will also provide a GPS, AIS and NMEA instrument feed to each of those devices simultaneously. You can then run apps and software on the devices (PC's, Mac's, tablets, smart phones, etc) for navigation (eg. put your own position and all vessels around you on a chart in the palm of your hand on an iPad).

phone, tablet, Mac, etc can all connect directly to Vision over WiFi with no other equipment required.

A day at the races and Coventry Climax (08/02/2014)

That's me, I am off to the Kilarney Race Circuit this morning to see all the period and classic racing cars!

The best money we can ever spend is to support the WPMC each year so they can afford to host the event.

I drove my Hillman Imp to second place in the Argus Group series car, in the same event but that was forty two years back!

1966 Sunbeam Sport oil cooler mount brackets

Made when the Rootes Car Co of Scotland introduced their amazing Sunbeam Sport Imps, the cars were just what we wanted and sales were good from day one.

The cars engine was uprated and to handle the  extra power an oil cooler was fitted at standard.

Now being re manufactured in Hout Bay, South Africa. Note the CNC lazer cut plates on the right
of the picture.

This was now 48 years ago and while later cars were sold with the oil coolers total Imp production stopped in 1976, so nothing was made after that time.

The first ten sets have all been pre sold!

They have now been fitted with high tensile nuts by brazing them on, plus that fold over flap was brazed to hold it firm. Bead blasting to remove the mill scale and spray painting with DTM (direct to metal) black paint will complete the process.

Next in production will be Alternator rear support brackets, timing pointers, engine lift plates etc.

The argie 10 dinghy kit, best value for money from three sheets of plywood

Dudley Dix wasted very little of the plywood sheet when he designed the Argie 10, in fact we need to use a thinner router cutter than normal so as not to cut into panels next to others.

Jaguar 3.8S type engine rebuild

I did this engine about thirty years back, then the engine had 96,000 miles on it.

With new piston rings and crank bearings from Joe of Masterparts fitted the engine has been fine
all this time.

Time being what it is the fact was the engine now needed some new pistons and here they are!

Plus 30 oversize, new crank bearings plus 20 oversize and we have a new engine!

We had two options, use second hand parts with new rings and bearings, or make the engine like new again, the car being a 1966 Jaguar 3.8 ltr, S type has to be worth a new engine?

The con rods have been bead blasted clean, this I like.

Inside the Jaguar 3.8 litre XK engine, its rather compact really?

New main bearings ready to accept the re ground crank, looks great!

 

 

The cylinder head was refurbished also, why not do this while we can.

Roberts Imp 998cc motor

This short motor was intended for another Imp, we had bothers with a used Sport 180 series and Wills ringed head, so we never got to fit the motor in the end.

The engine will now be fitted to a 1971 Hillman Imp Deluxe, with the Mk2 head and standard camshaft but with the larger performance single choke Solex carburettor, it will add power but at a
smoother and lower end of the band.

This is a really nice cylinder head design, with the overhead camshaft, once set, the tappets stay as they should be for many 1000s of miles.

 The original concept of the design was from Coventry Climax, we stock their silver logo stickers!

Testing times for British Seagull engines part two

Not quite just yet but with a customer in Pretoria placing his order for a restoration of his 1973 British Seagull 5hp motor, I can see Justin and myself having another go at testing the old against the new out board motors.

 

Note, we wore PFDs for the actual test.

Optimist Dinghy kit

This came to us when the KYC ( knysna yacht Club) wanted to start an Optimist sailing group but had no Optimists. Looking around they found the imported GRP boats but discovered that the hull cost more than one of our plywood epoxy kits with the mast and sail included!

They placed placed an order for five kits, it became eight as other parents joined
 into the scheme.

The first event was the SA Nationals at Hermanus YC at which they discovered the kit boats weighed within 700 grams of each other but were still lighter than the imported GRP boats.

Entering the Novice group they took four places out of the top five, including first place!

The truth is you can still be on the water for far less when you use  our kits and your own labour.

The pictures show that with our special jig assembly is quite a simple event, we also supply a fourteen page step by step builders guide with lots of pictures.

A well known yacht designer sent me a link to a classic car rebuilder, why? well we both enjoy older cars, he has a Lotus Europa Mk2 and I have a Singer Chamois with a mainly Sport specification.

Who is this guy? its Dudley Dix.

That's easy, it stands for   Cardboard Aided Design.
