Our Toylander is near ready to fit out

We are fast reaching the stage when fitting the steering and road wheels will be next, trying to keep up with those who have bought our kits is the idea,so far so good!

Ragin Cajun sends an AIS report.

As each order tends to be slightly different and some AIS need programing with the boats return signal,we bring orders in via TNT couriers,it takes just a few days from receipt of your payment.

The three of us take turns to cook the evening meal. So far we have eaten very well. Dinner has to be ready before dark, so we usually eat at about 6. I am drinking very little of the huge supply of whisky I put on board - somehow, I just don't feel like it. This abstinence can't do me any harm, although I find it very odd. Browno takes the first evening watch from 9pm - 12am. He then wakes me and I go through until 3am, then Tony does the 3am to 6am shift. The AIS has been wonderful, warning us of large ships and tankers in our path. It tells us their name, their destination, and when and where we will intercept them. We still have to be very careful on watch to look out for smaller boats without AIS. We have a timer which we can use if we get sleepy. It is set to go off at 15 minute intervals, so if you should doze off, it will wake you in time to do another check. I am coping quite well with the new sleep pattern, although I find it difficult to sleep during the day.

A new beech wood handle fitted to a Johnson wood Jack Plane.

A new handle on a fine and now restored very old Johnson wood block plane, introduces a new tool to the workshop,it will be well used on Johns Iroko drop keel foil in the morning.

The new handle was bonded in with epoxy and graded teak wood flour to ensure a good bond on the lower face of the handle, this will never fall out ever again,a little progress in wood plane making!

Epoxy glue will bond this handle in solid.

The front of the planes handle socket is square, while the back is round and on an angle leading to the back of the plane, making a slight wedge shape on the square end of the handle forces the new handle into the back of the plane socket when it is tapped home with a hammer.

Modern type router tools are very handy for such shaping,be very carefull how you hold the item to be worked on,you must offer the wood up from the correct side of the cutter.

So a new beechwood handle had to be fasioned,I used the handle on my number 6 Stanley (bailey) metal jack plane as a patern, that plane is 445mm long, while the Johnson wood plane is all of 610mm long, thats a nice length for doing foils and jointing work.

I thought to just try this old plane and see how it handled wood like Iroko, known for its hard and interlocked grain, sharp tools are an apsolute must,I was amazed at how this wood plane took off wood and with its wide blade and long base, makes for a very fine and straight finish.

I was not expecting to do this job today, rather start shaping the drop keel in Iroko for Johns Didi Mini Transat Cruise, things sort of said I need a handle on Dudleys old Johnson wood plane, using with as a trial on the finishing side showed me the plane is a 'whistler' so sharp is its blade that it makes a whistling sound as it removes shavings.

Stanley 90 small plane

The Stanley 90 in a work situation.

The Stanley 90 in parts, they were made in the USA and also England.

A complete Stanley 90 plane with its upper body fitted.

The silver plane in front is a Stanley 90 plane, with its top body removed, this was done so the blade would reach right into a corner, unfortunatly for me the top was never replaced and I only have what you see, does anyone out there have the missing bit! When new these planes were nickle plated, not chromed, they are the Rolls Royce of small planes. The other plane is also a Stanley but dates back a lot earlier, the throut is adjustable but the nose can not be removed as with the Stanley 90 version.

The South African Toylander Men

I am pleased to say there are quite a few of us these days but the picture of Andrew and Nigel show the two main guys,Andrew (red shirt) started it all really,he bought a set of plans from Richard at Real Life Toys,England, then asked CKD Boats to look at CNC cutting it for him.I then called in Nigel of Digicut to see what features we could introduce to ease Andrews ease of build, without taking any of the Toylander features away.Nigel used a system off our Didi Mini Transat boat kit interior parts, namely the 'finger Joint system' with those we could have basically a clip together car kit.

Andrew was the guy who had to see if it worked and when the build featured in last Novembers Popular Mechanics,it was Andrew we turned to for the use of his built up car,due to the succes of that magazine issue, more plans and kits were sold by us as a result. again we asked Andrew what changes we could make, with he and Nigel working together its just about perfect now.

Bead blasting service at CKD Boats

Clean again and ready to be etch primed and painted,a much better solution to buying new engine mounts.
Left click each picture to view in a larger size.

Old but still servicable engine mounts will look much better when blasted clean of surface rust, all items must be pre degreased before we will accept them as a job.

We have had a proffesional machine some while now,it feeds off tiny glass balls which will clean of most loose surface rust as long as its clean, the before and after pictures will give you an idea of whats possible. We charge a minimum of R365 per job, then per part hour there after.

Dudleys wooden plane by Johnson.

This plane is now under restoration and will soon be used in the workshop as a daily tool,it has its handle missing,if I can not locate it,a new one will be made. The body of the plane has splits and some wood worm damage on the back end, this has been fixed with an application of epoxy and teak wood flour we stock. To my great surprise the bottom of the plane is near true, just a slight bump aft of the blade exit that was removed with a belt sander, with a few more cracks to fill next and soon this old classic will be used once more.

This plane Iorn must be a century old,its warranted cast steel, the blade is tapered and also bi metal,to my surprise,it has a forged back of very hard steel as the cutting edge, the blade is forge stamped and marked as made by Johnson, this plane blade sharpend up to a razor edge, just like an old Mathieson plane I used to own,I could shave the hairs off my arm with that blade.

Why is this Dudleys plane? well it was once Dudley Middiltons RN (royal navy)plane,Craig, his son RCYC Commodore, gave it to me when he was clearing out his garage.I knew Dudley very well,in 1976/7 in the evening we used to join him on the aft decks of Tandaka for gin and tonics at the RCYC Small Craft basin,it possible he used this very plane in building his rather large steel yacht.

I put this wooden jack plane on Gumtree,it never sold, then I started to look at it more closely, what was its make, where was it from, was it any good? as ever these old tools have tales to tell.

Hard Dodger painting details

The devil is,they say,in the details and so it was with fitting the new hard dodger to this boat.Just fitting it was easy but we needed to make it look like it belongs there,so all the places where the dodger joined the coach roof were given a small epoxy fillet radius, when painted as it is now,it just blends in.

This was always intended to be a boat add on kit,it took a year to develop, one kit has gone to New Zealand already,we can adjust the various sizes to suit your boat,if in Cape Town we can recomend suitable tradesmen who can make and fit for you.

CKD dinghy kit

Does anyone want a nice traditional style dinghy that is both light weight, stable and strong? the idea is to produce a kit based on this GRP hull shape, the hull skin will then be double diagonal laminated from 3mm thick Superform bending plywoods and epoxy,we will supply the builders jig to mould over, plus all materials, seats, bulkheads, dagger board casing will all be pre cut.

The boat is 8ft 7 inches long,it will fit on most coach roofs and as you can see hangs of the back of this yacht with ease.It will hold four persons, sail, row and motor with just a 2hp outboard.Fitted with a water tight seat aft and a similar locker forwards, the boat is unsinkable, its made of wood anyway.

The blue float sets can be supplied also, complete with the correct anodised bolt rope track,4mm 316 stainless steel screws, large washers and dome headed nuts.We already offer rowing oars and rowlocks as a kit,the mast and boom plus a North Sail and Ronstan deck package will complete the kit.

Your kit will include a fully detailed builders guide, with a step by step introduction of where to start and what comes next, the plans fee will be part of the kits purchase fee.

Record 0-44c router with cutter folder

Still with its original box,the tool folder looks like new.I like this tool, its easy to set, fits the hand well, its plastic handle brings it into the days when traditional tools were being upgraded and wood as handles were being changed to plastics.

Dated back to the early sixties I would think, this tool is near in as new condition, its a very handy tool when smaller jobs need doing and setting up the shop electric router will take you more time,in todays world, its also a 'green' tool!

Record Plough Plane No. 044C No. 050C and No. 045C

The plough plane No. 045C was introduced October 1982. It was of similar design to the No. 044C and No. 050C which both preceded it. It was sold as a basic plough plane with only one cutter of 4mm width provided. If purchasers needed other widths of cutters these could be obtained up to ½" wide either individually or as a walleted set of 9. To allow the plane to undertake the work of a combination plough plane a conversion kit was offered. The No. K050C permitted a further 8 cutters to be used. These extra cutters consisted of 2 plough, 5 beading, and 1 tonguing cutter. These cutters could also be obtained individually or as a set in a plastic wallet. This arrangement allowed purchasers to build up a set of cutters which were best suited to their needs. The plane survived until 1995.

This info came from this web site to which I say many thanks.

Star brand face mask for spray painting

I mentioned the importance of the use of the correct type of face mask when using spray paints, this mask by Star was supplied by BASF who also supply our paints to special order, buying a mask from the paint supplier makes sense to me,they know the correct filters to provide.

A yellow Toylander

Warm as it was in Cape Town today (28c),it soon became clear that I would not be turning the Toylander body to do the topsides today, the paint needs a decent spell to dry out,so I applied a third and last coat,it adds more depth and body to the colour.Watch this space to view the finished body the right way up next tuesday, bonnet too!
Left click pictures to view full size.

This is a Faryman marine diesel engine yellow,Caterpiller too maybe? With twin pack DK paints two coats covers just about anything, the top sides can get three coats when I turn it over.
